USDA Announces MFP Payments, Local Rates; Sign-up Begins Monday

The sign-up period begins Monday for the next round of trade aid payments to farmers. The Department of Agriculture Thursday announced details of the Market Facilitation Program payments as part of a $16 billion trade aid package. USDA will begin mailing payments to producers in late August.

County payment rates range from $15 to $150 per acre, depending on the impact of “unjustified trade retaliation” in that county. Most payments for Corn Belt states average between $60 and $80 an acre. Meanwhile, producers who filed a prevented planting claim and planted an FSA-certified cover crop, with the potential to be harvested, qualify for a $15 per acre payment. Acres that were never planted in 2019 are not eligible.

Local county payment rates include:
DeWitt    $82
Logan    $76
Macon    $81
McLean    $82
Piatt    $87

Dairy producers will receive a per hundredweight payment on production history. Hog producers will receive a payment based on the number of live hogs owned on a day selected by the producer between April 1 and May 15, 2019.

For more information, visit farmers.gov/mfp or contact your local FSA office.

Steam Threshing Days Set For August 2 & 3

The Steam Threshing days set for August 2 – 3 at the Illinois Amish Heritage Center near Arthur will feature demonstrations in action. The show runs from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday and from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 3rd.

New this year will be a horse treadmill and broom corn threshing. The horse treadmill is used to transfer horsepower to operate a variety of machinery via a power shaft coming direct from the treadmill. Also new this year will be broom corn threshing and broom making. You’ll be able to watch the broom corn threshed to separate the seed from the head and see the broom made.

Steam Threshing Days will feature oat threshing with a steam traction engine, corn shelling, blacksmithing, horse shoeing, hay demonstrations, sawmill, dynomonitor demonstration, and numerous horse and tractor activities. A Parade of Power will be held on August 2 at Tours of the Schrock and Yoder houses will be ongoing throughout the show.

The Illinois Amish Heritage Center is located on Illinois 133 nine miles west of Arcola or 3.5 miles east of Arthur. The show entrance is on County Road 400E. For a full schedule, and more information, call Jim Fleming at 217-791-1026.
