CornBelters Take Nightcap of Double-Header

The Normal CornBelters came from behind in a Sunday doubleheader nightcap with a 5-3 win over the Florence Freedom. Steve Alexander crushed a walk-off two-run homer in the seventh, after Normal dropped the first game 8-4.

With the game tied 3-3, Daniel Cox led off the seventh inning with a walk against Florence closer Corey Martin. Alexander then took the first pitch he saw over the left field fence, a towering shot that stayed just fair. The home run was Alexander's second of the day, after hitting a grand slam in the first game. Normal stays in third place with the win.

The CornBelters wasted no time scoring in the scheduled 7-inning nightcap. Normal loaded the bases courtesy of a fielder's choice and two walks, and jumped in front 1-0 with an RBI groundout from Asif Shah.

Florence took the lead back in the second, as Jonathan Cisneros recorded an RBI single that scored Stephen Shults. Later in the inning, an infield single by John Malloy brought home Drew Rundle to put the Freedom on top 2-1.

Kevin Haas scored the third run for Florence two innings later. His leadoff triple was followed by a Cisneros single to give the Freedom a 3-1 lead. Normal then loaded the bases on three consecutive singles in the fifth, and tied the score with an RBI single from Daniel Cox along with another RBI groundout from Shah.

Berger worked six innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. Liam Ohlmann (2-1) earned the win after striking out the side in the seventh inning. Martin (2-1) picked up the loss, after relieving Florence starter Anthony Bello in the seventh.

Normal (22-13) and Florence (17-17) wrap up the series Monday at 7 p.m. Andy Clark (4-1, 6.28) starts against Ryan Sheldon (5-1, 1.86) of the CornBelters.
