Former Governor George Ryan is not getting out of prison any time soon. A federal appeals court has denied an appeal aimed at releasing him. Matthew Carter, one of Ryan's attorneys, says they thought a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on "honest services" laws would make way for his release.

The 77-year-old Ryan has about three years left on a six-and-a-half-year sentence. Ryan's legal team has vowed to pursue the case to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary.
