Arrests Made in Connection with July 4th Fireworks Attack

Police officials in Peoria have arrested two juveniles as suspects in a July 4th fireworks attack on firefighters and police.

The two were arrested on preliminary charges of aggravated battery on police, two counts of aggravated battery on fire personnel and mob action. Both are being held at the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Facility.

Police say firefighters and a small number of officers were called to the Taft Homes complex near downtown Peoria over a trash bin fire Monday night. A crowd that police said was in the hundreds was gathered to watch fireworks and blocked their way.

Police say someone started firing commercial-grade fireworks at firefighters as they worked to douse the flames. Several officers and firefighters were burned.
