Decatur Man Killed By Possible Stray Bullet

Police in Decatur believe a stray bullet fired from a back yard killed a man as he sat in his apartment.

Decatur Police Chief Todd Walker says 30-year-old Joseph Charles Wells died early Saturday of a head wound.

Walker says Wells and Jeffrey Lynn Mason Jr. were watching television in their apartment about 4 a.m. when the bullet shattered an apartment window and hit Wells.

The chief says the bullet was fired from about 100 yards away. Two people are being held on preliminary charges of involuntary manslaughter and other counts.

Walker wouldn't say why the gun was fired.

Wells and Mason entered into a civil union last month, but Walker doesn't believe they were targeted for their sexual orientation.
