Vote Expected on Future of U of I Aviation Program

The head of the University of Illinois' Urbana-Champaign campus says school trustees will vote next week on whether to close the school's aviation program.

Interim Chancellor Robert Easter oversees the campus. He says trustees will vote at their meeting next Thursday in Chicago. The vote isn't yet on the agenda for the meeting.

Easter recommended earlier this year that the program close to save $750,000 a year. The faculty-student Senate voted narrowly in April to keep the program open. While that move was only advisory, it appeared to at least temporarily stop the process.

Easter now says the school has to make a decision on the program.

Karen Koenig of the aviation institute's alumni panel say the university is rushing toward a decision.
