Illini; ISU Win Saturday

Freshman running back Donovonn Young introduced himself to Illinois fans with a pair of touchdowns and Nathan Scheelhaase ran for two more on Saturday in a 56-3 blowout over South Dakota State.

Illinois (2-0) rolled up 519 yards of offense and allowed just 96.

Young scored on a 2-yard run to give the Illini a 7-0 lead. The Houston native showed speed and strength on a 41-yard second-quarter touchdown that put the Illini up 35-3 over the Jackrabbits (1-1) at the half.

Scheelhaase took a seat in the third quarter with 93 yards rushing and 102 passing yards on six completions.

Illinois' defense picked off South Dakota State quarterback Thomas O'Brien twice. One was returned for a touchdown by linebacker Trulon Henry and the other set up a scoring pass by Reilly O'Toole to Evan Wilson.

Matt Brown tied a career high with five touchdown passes, Ashton Leggett ran for 110 yards, and Illinois State scored the game's first 31 points and coasted to a 52-21 win Saturday over Morehead State in the Redbirds' home opener.

Brown attempted only 17 passes and completed just 12, but 5 of them found the end zone. Tyrone Walker had 120 yards receiving on three receptions, all touchdowns, and Marvon Sanders had 127 yards, most of them on a 73-yard scoring grab. Matt Younger caught Brown's final touchdown pass, a 21-yarder that made the score 45-7 in the third quarter.

Darrelynn Dunn added a 25-yard rushing touchdown for the Redbirds (1-1).

The Eagles (1-1) got two touchdown passes from Zach Lewis, who finished 35 of 53 for 371 yards passing, but was sacked eight times. Desmond Cox scored on a 1-yard run for Morehead State's other touchdown.

O'Brien finished with 37 yards on 8 of 18 passing for South Dakota State.
