U of I Students Consider Smoke-Free Campus

Students at the University of Illinois can participate in a non-binding vote this week on whether they'd like to see smoking banned on the Urbana-Champaign campus.

Students can vote online this week.

Student Trustee Hannah Ehrenberg put the issue on an online student ballot by gathering more than 3,000 signatures.

Smoking is currently banned in buildings on campus but allowed in outdoor common areas.

Ehrenberg says most of the students she's spoken to support tighter restrictions.

If students vote in favor of the ban, committees representing students and faculty members would work out details of a proposal.

University spokeswoman Robin Kaler said the campus would likely consider the issue if students vote in favor of banning smoking.
