Illinois 2011 Traffic Fatalities Look to Be Down

Illinois State Police say they will focus on the four most common traffic violations during 2012.

Those violations are speeding, driving while intoxicated, not wearing seat belts and distracted driving. Illinois State Police officials say it's no coincidence that traffic fatalities in the state have fallen while the use of seat belts has increased.

Preliminary Illinois State Police statistics as of Thursday show 821 traffic crash fatalities in the state during 2011. That number is 25 fewer than during the same time period in 2010.

1 of the new laws Illinois State Police say they will enforce in 2012 involves seat belts. The new law requires all passengers of motor vehicles to wear seat belts. The law doesn't apply to taxicab passengers, authorized emergency vehicles or those with medical exemptions.
