Train Carrying Ethanol Derails in Gibson City

A train carrying ethanol has derailed in central Illinois, slipping off railroad tracks near Gibson City in Ford County.

Gibson City fire chief Bruce Kallal says three tanker cars derailed on Thursday afternoon but no ethanol spilled or leaked. Traffic on a 1-mile stretch of Illinois 9 was diverted around the scene of the derailment, near the One Earth Energy ethanol plant. No injuries were reported but emergency workers evacuated nearby businesses as a precaution.

Gibson City Mayor Dan Dickey says the train cars remained upright but dug into the ground after the track broke. Dickey says Illinois 9 should be reopened by morning.

Norfolk Southern Railroad officials are investigating the incident.

Gibson City is about 30 miles north of Champaign and 30 miles east of Bloomington.
