Champaign Considers Minor League Baseball Stadium

An exploratory committee is working on plans for a minor league baseball stadium in Champaign.

The committee will meet Monday to start working on details. Committee leader Tony Johnston says he hopes to have a business plan ready for the city within a year or two. Champaign Mayor Don Gerard put Johnston in charge of the effort.

Gerard has wanted to build a baseball stadium in Champaign since he ran for mayor last spring. Gerard thinks a minor league baseball team would boost jobs and economic development.

There have been other attempts at minor league baseball in Champaign, but none have been successful. Johnston says the difference this time is that there will be a better facility to house the team.
