FutureGen Land Near Mattoon Sold

Land in central Illinois intended for use by the FutureGen energy project has been sold to Coles Together.

Coles Together president Angela Griffin said Thursday the 440 acres of farmland and a pair of former residential properties west of Mattoon were sold by FutureGen Alliance for $700,000 to the local economic development group.

Griffin said Coles Together is discussing development prospects for the land.

The purchase price for the land a few years ago was $6 million. The U.S. Department of Energy has moved the project from Coles County to Morgan County.

FutureGen Alliance is a group of coal companies and other firms planning to use $1 billion in federal funds to refit a coal-fired power plant in Morgan County with technology that would capture and store carbon dioxide underground.
