Arrest Made in 2011 Wapella Armed Robbery

DeWitt County Sheriff Jered Shofner announced today that a suspect wanted in connection with a 2011 armed robbery in Wapella has been arrested in Chicago. Alexander Munos, 40, was arrested on a DeWitt County warrant by members of a U.S. Marshall’s Fugitive Task Force. Sheriff Shofner says the arrest proves “Bring violence here, and we will find you.”

The Sheriff said that Munos attempted to evade arrest by jumping from a third story window. The jump broke his pelvis. Munos has been hospitalized and will be extradited to DeWitt County after medical treatment.

Munos will face charges for his part in the theft of $750,000 in jewelry taken at gunpoint from a jewelry courier that stopped at a Wapella gas station in April, 2011. Deputies recovered all of the jewelry early on in the investigation.

Vanessa Ortiz, 29, was arrested the day of the incident has since been sentenced to prison.
The identification and arrest of Munos was the result of a 9 month investigation. Sheriff Shofner complimented the work of his detectives and others on the case “There were numerous agencies that contributed to this arrest. We are grateful for their assistance.”
