GOP Lawmakers Want Cook County Medicaid Request Dropped

Two Republican legislators want the Quinn administration to drop a request that would allow Cook County to expand Medicaid coverage.

Rep. Patti Bellock and Sen. Dale Righter call it "hypocritical" to expand, saying there are hundreds of millions of dollars in cost-saving reforms that were approved by lawmakers but not carried out. The reforms include a moratorium on expanding Medicaid eligibility.

This week, The Associated Press reported that the Department of Healthcare and Family Services is asking federal officials for an expansion of Medicaid coverage to low-income childless adults. It's supposed to bring millions in federal funding to Cook County but would require lawmakers to lift the moratorium.

Righter said Thursday he fears an expansion would cost Illinois more, even though Cook County pays for Medicaid without state funds.
