Heyworth Schools Confident Despite Financial Standing

The Heyworth School district has their eye on the future despite the lack of certainty in the present.

The Heyworth School Districts mid-year financial reports show they are spending more than they are bringing in. Heyworth Schools Superintendent Randy Merker explains the district is able get away with this because of money they have saved. He says despite this trend, he explains the district has begun to save for the future of their facilities.

Thanks to increasing enrollment numbers at the various levels, Merker says they can think about adding classrooms to their buildings because of the districts conservatism in the past. He says despite the district being in the red, he says they feel good about where they are at financially.

Merker applauds the work of the Board of Education and administration for working hard in the past to keeping money in the bank and set aside for a "rainy day", which he says currently it would seem they are experiencing that "rainy day".

While many school districts are seeking big ways to save money, Merker says the Heyworth district cut small things that were not entirely necessary to keep programs and teachers and staff around as much as possible, which has led to them being able to keep their teachers around. He feels the district is currently moving in the right direction and is happy with the positive things happening right now.
