Relay For Life Gearing Up For 2012

Plans are already underway for Relay For Life 2012.

This will be the fourth year for Relay for Life in DeWitt County and the proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. Clarene Arnold, Survivorship Chair for the DeWitt County Relay For Life says each year the Relay For Life is the Cancer Society's number one fundraiser, and in DeWitt County the amount of funds raised for them have increased each year.

All the funds raised go to the American Cancer Society, Arnold explains there is a small amount that is used to cover administrative costs, but a majority goes towards research, and the rest is used to aid those fighting cancer. She says the ways the funds are used are helpful in many creative ways.

This Saturday is the Relay For Life kick off event. Arnold explains they are bringing back a successful first year event called '5th Grade Smart', which is a spin off of "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader". Sheriff Jared Shofner and Chief Mike Reidy will be the celebrity guests as they battle it out with four fifth grade students. Arnold notes, any fifth grade student that would like to be a part of the event is welcome to be a part of the game.

The event again is this Saturday, February 11th at 6pm at First Christian Church's Family Life Center. Food will be served starting at 5:15 for a donation. Arnold says the event will also be an opportunity to sign teams up or learn more about Relay For Life and have any questions answered about the event.
