Gov. Pat Quinn has asked all the state's constitutional offices and some state agencies to slash their annual budgets by at least 9%, but won't say how he arrived at that figure.
Quinn declined to give details Sunday at an unrelated news conference.
The Democrat presents his budget Wednesday. It's expected to include a number of proposed cuts and closures.
Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon announced Saturday that she'd cut her office's budget by 9.4% to help Illinois deal with its financial problems. The state's backlog of unpaid bills is around $9.2 billion.
Quinn applauded Simon's efforts.
Quinn says he'll be closing "quite a few" state facilities. He wouldn't give details Sunday, only saying that some have been around for more 100 years and their time is up.
