Heyworth Schools Taking Advantage of State Grant

The Heyworth School district will be taking advantage of a state grant to help in the improvement of their facilities.

The grant is worth up to $50-thousand, and while the grant is not a great amount, the district is certainly happy to take advantage of it. Superintendent of the Heyworth School District Randy Merker explains the grant is available through the Illinois State Board of Education for facility improvements of up to $100-thousand dollars, and the state will reimburse half of that amount.

Heyworth will focus the grants towards more energy efficiency for the use of the grant this year. Merker explains their grade school and high school gymnasium lighting is not in good shape, as their current lights are original lights, so they will focus on replacing those this summer.

According to Merker, he estimates the project will cost a total of $60-thousand, with the State's grant, the Heyworth district will only be responsible for $30-thousand.

Heyworth hosts the IESA State Volleyball tournament in their gym, and Merker feels this improvement will improve those events. He also views these upgrades as classroom improvements. He says unless students are outside for their PE classes, the gym is essentially a classroom. The project will get underway during summer break.
