Clinton City Council To Consider New Downtown Parking Ordinance

The Clinton City Council could act on a new downtown parking ordinance this evening at their first April meeting.

The issue of downtown parking has once again been brought before the Council as business owners downtown are not happy with the current ordinance. Clinton Police Chief Mike Reidy explains downtown parking is nothing new to the Council or his department. He estimates every four to six years parking becomes an issue.

The number of tickets the City issues varies with the seasons. Chief Reidy explains when the weather is nice, the amount of tickets they issue goes up. When it is cold and snowy, the amount of tickets decreases. This year because of the mild winter has been very different and their tickets are higher to this point this year.

Chief Reidy says the current ordinance is in place to have people park on the square and then continue on to keep business coming to the square and not create a logjam of parking. He says whatever the City decides to do they will enforce.

The City Council this evening will be considering placing an ordinance on file for no parking tickets on the downtown square. Chief Reidy explains this was tried once before and it failed. The ordinance will be effective until August, at which point, the Council will reconvene on the issue to find out how it is going.

The Council convenes this evening to discuss and take possible action on the proposed ordinance. The meeting is at 7 pm at Clinton City Hall in the Council Chambers.
