American Red Cross Encouraging Families To Be Prepared For Storm Season

As storm season officially begins in Central Illinois, Red Cross wants to remind you to be aware weather conditions when there are chances for severe weather.

Executive Director with the Mid-Illinois Chapter of the American Red Cross, Carl Baker, says the tornado that devastated Harrisburg is an example of how storms can strike at any time. He says having enough water on hand for the family for three days is a good rule of thumb to follow. He says having cash on hand is always a good idea, power being out can eliminate ATM use.

Baker stresses having a plan in place. He says having two meeting places is a good idea. One away from the home and one outside your neighborhood. He also suggests keeping a spare list on paper of phone numbers of important contacts.

Foods to keep on hand include high protein foods and canned goods. Baker says keeping the refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible when the power is out is a good idea as well.

Baker says keep your pets in mind when preparing for a disaster. Make sure there is enough food for them and keep enough water on hand for them as well. He also says anyone in your home on medication or any other supplies for a need they may have, keep those things well marked and easily accessible.
