Cell Phone Companies Create Theft Database

Illinoisans who lose their cell phones may not have to worry about identity theft or deal with much of an inconvenience in the near future.  That's because wireless companies are teaming up to create a database designed to prevent theft and crackdown on the reactivation of lost or stolen phones.  The idea is in part to help keep the owner's personal information out of the hands of someone who steals or finds the phone.  Each cell phone will have an identifying code assigned to it.  That code will allow providers to deactivate the phone and stop it from being used again once it reported lost or stolen.  Anyone trying to crack the code could possibly face legal troubles.   So far, customers with AT&T, Sprint-Nextel, T-Mobile, and Verizon will have the protection.  According to the Federal Communications Commission, the database will be ready to launch sometime around October.
