Peoria School Board Lays Off Over 250 Workers

The school board in Peoria has voted to lay off 258 employees, including 53 teachers, in a bid to deal with a $6 million budget deficit.

The vote by board members in Peoria School District 150 on Monday was unanimous.

The layoffs also include 100 part-time teachers and 105 part-time educational support staff members.

District 150 attorney Stan Eisenhammer says if the teachers union can show where other cuts can be made, it may be able to reduce the number of laid-off teachers.

The school district is anticipating a decline in state and federal aid. About 14,000 students attend Peoria public schools.
