Turkey Season Opens This Weekend

The first season of Turkey hunting kicks off this weekend.

A number of hunters will head out starting tomorrow morning around the area. DNR Conservation Police Officer Ray Wichus reminds hunters they do need to get permits to hunt turkeys. CPOs do see a good number of turkey hunters where they are allowed to hunt between DeWitt and Piatt Counties.

Wichus reminds mushroom hunters to steer clear of State Parks that allow mushroom and turkey hunting until 1 pm in the afternoon. He says the two hunting groups have had confrontations in the past because of mushroom hunters interfering with a hunters turkey hunting. He feels this is the best remedy to keep tempers from flaring.

Hunters are encouraged to park in the marked parking lots of the parks they are hunting in. Wichus says there may be regulations for cities or county roads you may not be aware of you could get citations for. He notes hunting hours and some regulations will be posted on signs in those parking lots as well.

Again turkey hunting season gets underway this weekend and runs until the middle of May.
