Arthritic Camel At Peoria Zoo Euthanized

The Peoria Zoo in central Illinois has euthanized an arthritic camel after a long period of declining health.

Karina, a 25-year-old camel with one hump, was captured from a wild population of the animals in Australia and came to the zoo in 1987.

The camel had been receiving arthritis medication since 2008 and she spent a lot of time seated or lying on her side. That created problems with pressure sores and eventually led to the decision to euthanize the animal.

The zoo has no immediate plans to acquire more camels.
