University of Illinois professors Edward Diener and Jennifer Lewis have been named to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Diener is the Joseph R. Smiley Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Illinois. Lewis is the Hans Thurnauer Professor of Materials Science and Engineering.

The academy was founded in 1780 and honors outstanding leadership and scholarship in a variety of fields.

Diener and Lewis joined 218 other new members.
