Residential Speeding Concerns Brought Before City Council

Recently, the issue of vehicles speeding in residential areas of Clinton has been brought before the Clinton City Council.

Clinton resident Jim Defebaugh claims young people are speeding down Walnut Street past his residence, leaving children on the street vulnerable. He has approached other avenues and has asked the City to put a stop sign up to control traffic.

Public Works Director Steve Lobb explains stop signs are not speed control devices, but rather traffic control devices. He says in some instances stop signs can in fact promote speeding further.

After much discussion on the issue at the Clinton City Council meeting April 2, the decision was made to heighten patrols on Walnut Street. The past few weeks Clinton Police Officers have been surveying the area taking speeds of cars traveling on the road. Commissioner of Streets and Public Improvements Nan Crang brought the results forward this past Monday. Over 200 vehicles were surveyed with well over 80% of vehicles gunned going within the speed limit.

Clinton police Chief Mike Reidy noted just one vehicle was given a warning. He says he wanted his officers to simply take data on the area, he felt if they started handing out tickets, word would get out they were patrolling the area more and it may throw their numbers off.
