Fishing Kicking Off Early In 2012

Thanks to a mild winter, fishing season has taken off a little earlier this year. The Department of Natural Resources reminds out at the lakes around the area to keep the state's regulations in mind.

DNR Conservation Police Officer Ray Wichus says there are size limits to the fish you can keep, and also the amount of fish you can keep. Crappie, bass and walleye all have weight limits and amounts you can keep. Wichus says these regulations are in place to keep the numbers of fish stocked level.

DNR Officers stress to have those fishing licenses current and along side as you are fishing. Wichus says officers will likely ask to see your license to make sure it's current. They may search to make sure you are not hiding any fish and you are within regulations.

A popular way to fish that DNR Officers are seeing become increasingly popular is an Alabama Rig. An Alabama Rig makes bass fishing more effective. Wichus says those have recently been ruled illegal at state parks where regulation is two poll and line limit.

Breaking any of these regulations are considered a petty offenses and Wichus explains it is a maximum $150 citation.
