Blue Ridge Schools Budget, Staffing Stable For FY13

The Blue Ridge School District's budget looks positive for Fiscal Year 2013.

Despite declines in the state's general revenue, the Blue Ridge budget for FY13 should shape up nicely. Superintendent of Blue Ridge Schools, Susan Wilson says this is in large part to farm values rising. She says they should be very close to a balanced budget.

Wilson says the district is fortunate to have the quality farm land in their district. She says if they were a primarily residential district they would be dipping into their reserves and in turn the budget outlook would not be as positive.

The district is looking at reducing just one class in the district. Wilson explains currently their kindergarten class is small enough they can reduce a section there, but she notes, there is a possibility they may need to add the section back if they get enough new students. All in all, Wilson says like the budget, staffing is going to be stable.

The district has one teaching retirement to fill this year, but Wilson says next year will be a big year, as across the district, nine teachers are slated to retire.
