IHSA Considers Options For Disabled Athletes

The Illinois High School Association is studying the possibility of state championship-level sports activities for students with disabilities.

The IHSA said in a news release that a committee studying the possibility met Monday in Bloomington. The committee will make recommendations to the organization's board.

A school board member from Eureka told the board that sports can be invaluable for students with disabilities. Teri Ehrenhardt told the committee that her son, Kellen, has Down syndrome and ran cross country and track when he was in school. She said he now helps out as a coach for other athletes.

The IHSA says the committee is expected to report to the board before the board's June 11 meeting.
