Cubs, Cards Win; Peavy Named AL Pitcher Of The Month

>>Samardzija, Cubs Roll Over Reds

(Cincinnati, OH)  --  Bryan LaHair and Ian Stewart both blasted solo homers to back seven-and-two-third stellar innings from Jeff Samardzija as the Cubs edged the Reds, 3-1.  Samardzija struck out seven and allowed just one run on three hits to improve to 3-and-1 on the season.  Carlos Marmol worked a 1-2-3 ninth to nail down his second save.  Geovany Soto added an RBI single in the win.  Joey Votto scored on a Jay Bruce double-play ball in the fourth frame to account for Cincinnati's lone run of the game.  Bronson Arroyo gave up all three runs through six innings of duty to absorb the loss for the Reds, who had won their last two games.

(St. Louis, MO)  --  Carlos Beltran went 4-for-5 with two home runs and seven RBI to help the Cardinals crush the Pirates, 12-3.  St. Louis scored all 12 runs in the first three innings as they have taken the first two games of the three-game set and have won five of their last six overall.  Lance Lynn improved to 5-and-0 after tossing six-and-two-thirds innings of two-run ball while striking out six.  Josh Harrison was 2-for-2 with two RBI for Pittsburgh in the loss.  A.J. Burnett was rocked to the tune of 12 runs in two-and-two-thirds innings.  Burnett's ERA jumped from 1.38 to 8.04 in the loss.

(Chicago, IL)  --  Carlos Santana smacked a three-run homer and Travis Hafner hammered a two-run shot as the Indians cruised to a 6-3 win over the White Sox.  Jack Hannahan added an RBI double for the Tribe, who improved to 8-and-3 on the road this season.  Joe Smith worked a scoreless inning in relief of Josh Tomlin to register the win.  Chris Perez closed it out to lock down his eighth save.  Johnny Damon led off and went 0-for-3 with a walk and strikeout in his Cleveland debut.  He left the game in the seventh inning due to muscle cramps.  Adam Dunn clubbed a solo home run and Alexei Ramirez had a two-run single for the Southsiders, who had won their last two games.  Will Ohman was charged with the loss.

>>Peavy Named AL Pitcher Of The Month

(New York, NY)  --  Chicago White Sox right-hander Jake Peavy has been named the American League Pitcher of the Month for April after going 3-and-1 with a 1.67 earned run average in five starts.  The 30-year-old Peavy struck out 33 batters and issued just five walks in 37-and-two-third innings for Chicago.  He threw two complete games, including a shutout, and captured the award for the first time.
