Illinois Communities Awarded $1.5-Million In Grants

More than $1.5 million in grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development will go to local communities in Illinois.

Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin announced the grants from two HUD programs Thursday.

Five Illinois local governments will receive money for economic development. The two largest of the competitive project grants will go to the city of Springfield and the Lakeview Regional Museum in Peoria. Three Chicago projects will also get grants.

The Neighborhood Initiative awarded one grant in Illinois for stimulating investment and community revitalization in distressed neighborhoods. The grant will go to Teen Challenge, a program that helps with drug and alcohol addictions in the state.
