Bill Spares Lawmaker From Paying Disputed Taxes

The Illinois House has passed a bill that spares a lawmaker from paying taxes owed on an office lease

In a 60-54 vote, the House spared Democratic Rep. Monique Davis from paying leaseholder taxes on her district office.

Chicago Board of Education officials say Davis' office lease ended in 2002 and she stopped paying rent. Davis says she requested a new lease several times, but didn't get a response.

Davis was sued in 2009 by the school system in a bid to collect seven years of back rent and uncollected leasehold taxes and penalties totaling $444,500.

The measure passed Tuesday by the House would bar taxation on any property owned by a state or local government leased to another state or local government.

The Senate must vote on the legislation.
