A federal grand jury has indicted a Peoria couple captured after spending 12 years on the run from accusations they bilked investors out of about $1.7 million.

U.S. Attorney Jim Lewis says Nelson and Janet Hallahan were indicted Thursday for failure to appear for sentencing in May 2000. The Hallahans were arrested May 5 in an Arizona desert town. Authorities, acting on a tip from "America's Most Wanted," arrested the Hallahans in Tonopah, about 50 miles west of Phoenix.

The Hallahans pleaded guilty to federal charges of conspiracy to commit mail and bank fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering and then disappeared in January 2000.

They are in custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending extradition to Illinois.
