Now Is The Time To Prepare Boats For Memorial Day Weekend

If you are planning on taking that boat out to one of the many area lakes this Memorial Day weekend, before you head out, the Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police have a few things to keep in mind.

Now is the time to give a quick 15-20 minute check of the boat and it's equipment to make sure everything is still in good shape. DNR Conservation Police Officer Ray Wichus reminds boaters to give those life jackets a good once over especially.  He says if they are a little worn out from the previous year or from a lack of use over time, it's a good investment to get out and get yourself some new ones.

Fire extinguishers are required on several boats. Wichus reminds boaters to check and make sure the fire extinguisher is usable. He notes he has already seen several boats this year with bad fire extinguishers on deck.

Wichus also reminds boaters to give the engine and electric on the boat a quick once over. You will also want to be sure and check the battery is anchored down and covered. A loose battery could cause some major problems.

There have been several instances of boat fires over the past several years that have completely destroyed boats on the lake. Because grease, oil and gas float, throwing water on them if they are on fire is not going to work, which is why having a serviceable fire extinguisher is a must on most engine boats.

Boats of a certain size also must have a throwable device and that is approved.

With lots of sun an warm weather in the forecast for this Memorial Day weekend, local lakes and parks are sure to be very busy. DNR Conservation Police encourage everyone to be safe wherever they may be or what they are doing.
