Quinn Threatens To Close State Parks

Governor Quinn is threatening to shut down state parks because of the state's financial squeeze.  Officials with the Department of Natural Resources say if lawmakers don't find a way to make changes to the Medicaid and pension systems, the parks may have to close. Quinn's administration has taken the message to outdoorsmen, asking them to lobby lawmakers on getting necessary reforms taken care of.  According to a Quinn spokesperson, the governor doesn't want to close parks but it may be one of the only alternatives to saving money if lawmakers don't come up with Medicaid and pension fixes.  While no specific parks have been identified, DNR officials say they hope lawmakers pass a law that allows them to charge entrance fees to help bear the load. The news of park closures comes just three years after Quinn launched a campaign to keep the parks open after his predecessor, Rod Blagojevich, threatened to shut them down.
