Cards, Sox Win, Cubs Swept

(St. Louis, MO)  --  Lance Lynn improved to 7-and-1 after dealing six innings of three-run ball as the Cardinals downed the Padres, 6-3.  Carlos Beltran socked his 14th home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth inning, that broke a 3-3 tie.  David Freese went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, two runs scored and two RBI for the Cards, who swept the three-game series from the Padres.  Jason Motte nailed down his eighth save.  All three San Diego runs were scored in the first inning including a lead off home run by Will Venable.  Jeff Suppan gave up five runs in four-and-two-thirds innings to earn the loss.

(Houston, TX)  --  J.D. Martinez went 3-for-4 with three RBI to back seven strong innings from Wandy Rodriguez as the Astros cruised to a 5-1 win over the Cubs.  Rodriguez fanned five and allowed just one runs on eight hits to improve to 4-and-4 on the season.  Matt Downs drew a bases-loaded walk and Jose Altuve was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat to plate another to cap off a three-run eighth frame for Houston, which swept the three-game set at Minute Maid Park.  Reed Johnson's solo homer in the first inning accounted for Chicago's lone run of the game.  Jeff Samardzija was saddled with the tough-luck loss after allowing two runs through six innings of duty.  The Cubs have lost nine straight games.

>>Sale, ChiSox Shut Out Twins

(Chicago, IL)  --  Paul Konerko went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and Alex Rios added a solo shot to back seven scoreless innings from Chris Sale as the White Sox shutout the Twins, 6-0.  Sale struck out six and allowed just two hits with a pair of walks to improve to 5-and-2 on the season.  Adam Dunn, A.J. Pierzynski and newly-acquired Orlando Hudson each plated a run for the Southsiders, who have won five of their last six games.  Scott Diamond gave up five runs, just two earned, in six innings of duty to suffer the loss for Minnesota.
