Lincoln Receives Grant For Downtown Improvements

The City of Lincoln was recently awarded a grant worth $675-thousand from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to improve their downtown area.

width=The planning process of the use of the grant outlines five goals the city would like to accomplish through the use of the grant. Lincoln Mayor Keith Snyder explains community engagement is going to drive and sustain the process. He feels giving the whole community an opportunity to share their thoughts will be a much better approach than having civic leaders and business owners making all the decisions.

The city wants to make the downtown area accessible. Mayor Snyder notes another goal they have to give the downtown a little historical flavor. He feels Lincoln is rich with history and would like that history to have a place in this process.

The grant comes along with some strings attached. Mayor Snyder explains the work they do not only has to receive an OK from the DCEO but also from the Historic Preservation Agency. He notes it limits what the city thought they may be able to do with the money, but he still feels confident they will be able to get a very good outcome for the downtown Lincoln area.

The money has to be spent by the end of 2013. Mayor Snyder is hopeful to seek out some other grants to tie into this project, making the reality of this endeavor several years out for Lincoln.
