To Tamms, Prison Clsoure Means Pain, Betrayal

There's anger at Gov. Pat Quinn in the Alexander County community of Tamms over his decision to mothball the state's only "supermax" facility.

Despite Quinn's proposal to keep the prison open by selling it to the federal government, many in this county - 1 of only four to vote for Quinn when he won office two years ago - see his decision as evidence that he doesn't care much about residents who live outside Chicago.

They're also angry because closing the prison means losing hundreds of jobs in a county that in May had the highest unemployment rate in Illinois.

The state's budget crisis has prompted lawmakers to make painful spending decisions and Quinn aides say the prison is half empty and far more expensive to run than other facilities.
