Cubs, Cards Win; Sox Open Series With Rangers

>>Samardzija, Cubs Shut Down Braves

(Atlanta, GA)  --  Luis Valbuena ripped a tie-breaking three-run double to back seven stellar innings from Jeff Samardzija as the Cubs cruised to a 4-1 win over the Braves.  Samardzija struck out 11 and allowed just one run on four hits to improve to 6-and-7 on the season.  James Russell closed it out in the ninth to nail down his second save.  Anthony Rizzo added a solo home run for Chicago, which has won four straight and six of its last seven games overall.  Martin Prado's RBI single in the sixth inning accounted for Atlanta's lone run of the game.  Tommy Hanson fanned eight, but gave up all four runs during seven innings of duty to suffer the loss.  The Braves have dropped four-of-five.

(St. Louis, MO)  --  Allen Craig homered twice and plated three as the Cardinals routed the Rockies, 9-3.  Matt Holliday also went deep and knocked in two for the Cards in the opener of the four-game set.  Kyle Lohse tossed seven-and-a-third innings of two-run ball to improve to 8-and-2.  Tyler Colvin launched a two-run homer, while Wilin Rosario added a solo blast for Colorado, which has dropped three straight.  Tyler Chatwood allowed four runs in two-and-a-third innings to take the loss.

(Chicago, IL)  --  The Chicago White Sox open up a three-game homestand against the Texas Rangers at The Cell.  Chris Sale will go up against Roy Oswalt in the opener.  The Southsiders split a four-game set with the New York Yankees over the weekend, but dropped their last two to fall to 42-and-37 on the season.
