University of Illinois Board To Keep Police Institute Open

The University of Illinois and the board that oversees police training academies in the state have reached a deal to keep the Police Training Institute at the school's Urbana-Champaign campus open.

The Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and lawmakers from east-central Illinois say the board and the university will jointly operate the institute. The news release announcing the deal Monday comes less than two months after the university said it would close the institute.

Under the agreement, the institute will focus on training and academic research.

University leaders had complained about having to spend $600,000 a year on the institute given that it isn't part of the university's core mission. Financial details of the new agreement weren't discussed in the news release.
