Seven Charged In Bribery Scheme

Federal prosecutors are charging seven people with bribery conspiracy, including Dean Nichols, treasurer for former state Senator Ricky Hendon.  Prosecutors allege Nichols was willing to pay kickbacks to a fake federal agency official in return for receiving a 25-thousand dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  He allegedly claimed he could recruit others to apply for grants and provide kickbacks as well.  Nichols allegedly provided 31 completed grant applications.   Federal documents allege he planned on earning 100-thousand dollars out of the deal and would purchase "a big summer home" in Michigan if the grants worked out. It was all a part of an FBI undercover sting, similar to that of state representative Derrick Smith.  An actual scenario did not exist.  Two Cook County corrections officers and four others were charged as a result of the investigation.
