Special Committee Votes To Recommend Rep. Smith For Expulsion

A special House committee voted 11-1 Thursday afternoon to recommend the full Illinois House expel Representative Derrick Smith over federal charges that he took a $7,000 bribe.

The 12-member committee met behind closed doors to decide whether Smith should be punished and to what extent.  Representative Chapin Rose says the decision is now in the hands of the full House.

No date has been set for the full House to make the decision, but Governor Quinn is considering calling a special session of the General Assembly to deal with the state pension crisis and handling the Smith situation.
