Historic Discovery Made In Clinton Last Week

A piece of Clinton history was uncovered this past week.

As contractors brought down the buildings on the 200th block of Washington Street, they made a very unique discovery. Clinton City Finance Commissioner, Tom Edmunds explains the foundation to the second building of the Clinton Presbyterian Church was uncovered. Based on records the church has, Edmunds explains they know it is the church's foundation because of the material of the foundation.

Edmunds says the first church building is the building Abraham Lincoln was in. Edmunds says the current building they has a stone step from all three buildings. That step is on the "Looking For Lincoln" trail.

Edmunds has taken several measures to certify the accuracy of the claim this is the foundation of the former church. He says he took the contractor to the church and he actually counted the bricks to approximate the width of the building to locate the foundation.

Edmunds feels it's very unique to stumble upon a piece of history like this in Clinton and that it is still there.
