Enrollment Down At Eastern Illinois

Enrollment has dropped 6.8% at Eastern Illinois University this school year.

The campus in Charleston reported Wednesday that on-campus and off-campus enrollment was about 10,400 this fall semester. That's compared to nearly 11,200 last fall semester. The university said in a news release that the dip in enrollment was expected. The school blamed "a tough economy coupled with a decrease in state financial aid."

School officials said they have already started enrollment management efforts to reverse the trend. That efforts would have the school identify, market to and recruit students.

Eastern's freshman class has about 1,900 students. The senior class has about 3,100 students. Minority enrollment is 21.7%, up from 19% in 2011. There are 152 international students at EIU.
