Scheelhaase Practices, Ankle Still Question

Illinois coach Tim Beckman says starting quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase practiced Wednesday and his injured ankle looked healthier than it had earlier this week.

Beckman won't say whether Scheelhaase will be able to start or play Saturday at Arizona State (1-0). Beckman says he'll make that decision after Illinois (1-0) practices Thursday morning.

Beckman says backup quarterbacks Reilly O'Toole and Miles Osei (OH'-say) split most of the snaps with the starters in practice this week. He said the two are what he called neck and neck right now as they jockey for the potential starting spot.

Scheelhaase injured his left ankle late in last Saturday's 24-7 win over Western Michigan. O'Toole played most of the second half but was just 2-3 passing for seven yards.
