DCFS Cuts Could Mean Increased Crime

Cuts to the Division of Children and Family Services could have a big impact on abused and neglected children, local law enforcement, community agencies, and schools.  Alton Police Chief David Hayes says the services offered through DCFS help keep families together, which cuts down on crime.

Because DCFS is operating under a 1991 court order that requires certain caseload levels for each employee, they cannot just cut caseworkers.  The option is to end grants to social service agencies that provide assistance to families that would previously receive help.  The AFSCME Local 1805 is mounting a campaign to have lawmakers restore funding to some programs it sees as vital to the well-being of children, families and communities around the state.
