White Sox Win, Eliminated From Playoffs; Cards Inch Closer To Playoff Birth; Cubs Lose 100th Game

(Cleveland, OH)  --  Dayan Viciedo hit a grand slam and plated five as the White Sox hammered the Indians, 11-0.  Despite the win, Chicago was eliminated from playoff contention when the Tigers beat the Royals.  The Tigers captured the AL Central title with the win.  Adam Dunn knocked in two runs for the White Sox.  Hector Santiago struck out 10 over seven innings of one-hit ball to improve to 4-and-1.  Corey Kluber allowed four runs in five-and-two-thirds innings to fall to 2-and-5.

The Tigers wrapped up the division crown with a 6-3 win over the Royals in Kansas City.  Detroit has won the Central two straight years.  The White Sox have been eliminated from playoff contention.

(St. Louis, MO)  --  Jaime Garcia homered and pitched into the seventh inning to lead the Cardinals to a 4-2 win over the Reds.  Garcia struck out six over six-and-two-thirds innings to improve to 7-and-7.  Jason Motte earned his 41st save.  St. Louis' magic number to clinch the second NL Wild Card spot is one.  Brandon Phillips and Ryan Hanigan plated the runs for the Reds.  Bronson Arroyo fell to 12-and-10 with the loss.  Reds manager Dusty Baker returned from an 11-game absence.

>>Astros Blank Cubs

(Chicago, IL)  --  Lucas Harrell and three relievers combined on a two-hitter as the Astros blanked the Cubs, 3-0, in the first of a three-game series.  Harrell fanned seven over six innings to improve to 11-and-11.  Wesley Wright got the final four outs for his first save.  Fernando Martinez homered, Matt Dominquez smacked an RBI triple and Scott Moore added a run-scoring single in the win.  Jason Berken allowed two runs in four-and-two-thirds innings to fall to 0-and-3.  The Cubs suffered their 100th loss of the season.

>>A's, Tigers Clinch Postseason Berths

(Undated)  --  The Oakland Athletics and Detroit Tigers have clinched postseason berths.  The A's topped the Rangers, 4-3, to earn at least a Wild Card spot in the American League.  Oakland is a game back of Texas in the West.  In turn, the Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Angels were eliminated from postseason contention.  The Tigers rolled Kansas City 6-3 to win the AL Central and knock out the second-place White Sox.

On the National League side, the Washington Nationals clinched the East after the Atlanta Braves fell to the Pirates.  Atlanta earned the number-one Wild Card spot.  The St. Louis Cardinals inched closer to the playoffs after a 4-2 win over the Reds.  The Cards have a two-game edge on the Los Angeles Dodgers for the final Wild Card position.  All teams have two games remaining in the regular season.
