9 1/2 Foot Tall Cake Celebrates New Peoria Museum

Bakers in central Illinois created a 9 1/2-foot tall cake to celebrate the new Peoria Riverfront Museum.

Six local shops worked together on the six-level cake, which was dedicated to the museum on Friday. It took five months to make the confection. Workers used about 50 pounds of sugar fondant. The cake also is made of plaster. That's because it needs to last until the museum's grand opening on Oct. 20.

Museum CEO Jim Richardson says the cake has "captured the spirit of the museum." He says it's "quite ephemeral, and shows the creativity this place inspires."
