The deadline is fast approaching for thousands of Illinois residents who received a tax-filing extension. Internal Revenue Service spokesman Bill Brunson says time is of the essence.

The IRS is urging those taxpayers to double check their returns and take advantage of electronic filing at irs.gov. October 15th is the last day for most taxpayers who requested a six-month extension. Exceptions include military veterans returning from a combat zone and people in parts of Louisiana and Mississippi affected by Hurricane Isaac.
