Fire Safety Week In Illinois

It's fire safety week in Illinois and local safety officials want to remind area residents of basic things to do to prevent fires.

Recently, the Mid-Illinois Chapter of the American Red Cross has responded to over 10 fires of the past two weeks. Tara Winter with the Mid-Illinois Chapter of the American Red Cross says this week is a good reminder of things to  be aware of to help ensure you and your family's safety.

Part of the Red Cross's focus is to get out into the schools of their four County area and to inform them of things to do in the event of a fire. Winter says parents should also take the opportunity this week to talk to their kids about what to do should there be a fire in their home.

With the fall season upon us, residents around Central Illinois will most likely be burning leaves as they fall. Executive Director of the Mid-Illinois Chapter, Carl Baker explains to never leave those fires unattended. He say you never know when they could spread with a gust of wind.

Winter also encourages to have those dryer vents checked out and cleaned out. As heaters begin to be turned on, the Red Cross is also encouraging those residents to get those carbon monoxide detectors checked because the gas can build up in those ducts over the summer and the gas is deadly.
